The Haematology Clinic delivers a comprehensive service to Kasemrad Hospital and primary care for patients with a wide range of blood abnormalities

The term Haematology is derived from Greek, meaning the study of blood.

In Kasemrad laboratory, the fundamental concepts of biology and chemistry are applied to the medical diagnosis and treatment of various disorders or diseases related to or manifested in the blood, bone marrow and other body fluids. We utilise a combination of state of the art computerized automated analysers and manual procedures to produce highly accurate and timely test results.

The most common procedures performed include the CBC (complete blood count), which includes the measurement and examination of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, and the white blood cell differential counts. From the changes we observed in the counts, size, morphology, maturation sequence or relative distribution of these cells, the physicians can confirm or rule out clinical impressions of a possible blood disorder such as leukemia, cancer, infection, anemias, blood born parasites or other hereditary blood disorders. Results of basic procedures may necessitate specialised procedures such as bone marrow aspiration, special staining of the cells for their cellular antigen markers to further identify them, as well as other Chemistry, Microbiology, or Serology testing.

The field of haematology also includes the study of hemostasis and thrombosis, a study in the balance of bleeding and clotting state of the body. Routine and special procedures performed in the laboratory help in the diagnosis of bleeding and clotting disorders. St. Michael's is the regional centre for the treatment of Hemophiliacs, one of the most well known hereditary deficiency of one of the clotting factors.

Last but not least, the Immunology section of our laboratory studies the memory, specificity and the recognition of the "non-self" ability of the body. By analysing the changes in concentration of the specific antibodies produced after exposure to various infectious illnesses, we can assess the effectiveness of the immunity or protection acquired.
