In
addition to these sub-specialties, general surgeons are clinicians
who deal with hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, and a variety
of procedures that are common in the general population which require
less sub-specialisation.
Surgical Oncology is the treatment of cancers utilising surgical interventions for breast cancer, skin cancer, stomach, pancreas and liver cancer, as well as gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer. Overlap between Surgical Oncology and the other programmes within our General Surgery is facilitated by each of these physicians being parts of the same multi-disciplinary group. All Surgical Oncology programmes for specific organs are multi-disciplinary involving regular interactions with gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialists.

Emergency Service
Emergencies will be admitted through the Emergency Room and will be assessed and investigated as appropriate. After complete work up, a proportion of patients may be sent home on appropriate treatment and the remainder will be admitted for treatment or observation.

The following support is available: Physiotherapy, Breast Care, Stoma Therapy, Cancer Support Team.
Endocrine Surgery
Surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands is provided.
Upper GI Surgery
The unit provides outpatient consultation, endoscopic examinations and the full range of gastro-intestinal surgery, both open and laparoscopically, particularly cholecystectomy apart from specialist hepatic procedures.
Vascular Service
A specialist Vascular Service is provided under the direction of the General Surgeons with a special interest. The service has access to specialist investigative and invasive radiological services. The vascular service includes:
- Operative Inpatient work. A comprehensive range of aortic operations including aorto bi-femoral and aortic aneurysm grafting.
- The full range of peripheral vascular work.
- In addition to operative inpatient work, the service provides non-operative inpatient work comprising investigative procedures and assessment for peripheral vascular disease.
Thoracic Surgery
A outpatient service is provided by the visiting oesophageal and thoracic consultant surgeon.
Endoscopy.
A significant proportion of the diagnostic and therapeutic upper
and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures is carried out by
General Surgeons with particular expertise in endoscopy.
