What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis) is a safe and effective laser vision correction technique for myopia (shortsightedness), astigmatism and hyperopia (long sightedness). LASIK utilises the microkeratome to create a thin corneal “flap” which exposes the corneal bed. The highly accurate “cold” excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors before the flap is replaced.

Kasemrad LASIK Centre commits to always bring our patients the most recent updated technology available in the world. Not just any new technology, but technology that is proven to work, and is indicated medically, always at an affordable price. We introduce the latest technology the Optimum LASIK (4th Generation LASIK)

Optimum LASIK (4th Generation LASIK)
This actually includes 2 different methods of LASIK surgery: Wavefront and Optimisation.

Wavefront: Using the Zywave aberrometer and the Zyoptix wavefront system, higher order aberrations are measured within a patient's eye (beyond merely the errors that are corrected with spectacles) and then calculate an ablation profile to correct for these. The goal is to create even better vision than spectacles are capable of producing. Wavefront technology has been shown to provide better quality of vision in many patients than the premium LASIK and reduces the frequency of glare complications after LASIK surgery.

Optimisation: This form of LASIK is designed to correct a patient's vision problems while still retaining the natural shape of a patient's cornea. This design reduces possible post-operative glare complications and increases the quality of vision that is produced.

Why is LASIK so popular today?

LASIK is the fastest growing ophthalmologic procedure in the world today, and its popularity gives testimony to its safety, effectiveness and accuracy. As a painless 15-minute outpatient procedure utilising only anaesthetic eye drops, patients recover rapidly with minimal temporary side effects and a quick return of usable vision, often by the very next day.

Chances of success

LASIK results reported worldwide have been very encouraging, with 99% chance of attaining 6/12 vision (the legal visual acuity required to pass a driver’s licence examination) for low myopia (-6 diopters or lower), 97% for moderate myopia and 85% for high myopia (higher than -10 diopters). Kasemrad’s experienced surgeon plays an important part in the success of your procedure.

Who is suitable for LASIK?

You should be at least 18 years of age with stable vision for at least one year. You should also not be pregnant or breastfeeding and have eyes free of disease. People who encounter problems in using spectacles and contact lenses due to their profession, activities, eye health, or the environment that do not facilitate their use will benefit from LASIK. You will be required to undergo a thorough eye examination at Kasemrad Lasik Centre to assess your suitability for LASIK before undergoing the procedure.

Not everyone is suitable for the LASIK procedure. Through a comprehensive consultation and assessment, we are usually able to exclude most of the common contraindications to LASIK. A pre-trip assessment by our ophthalmologist will improve your chances tremendously.

What can LASIK do for you?

LASIK can reduce your dependence on the hassle and inconvenience of contact lenses and eyeglasses. You can enjoy recreational activities especially water and contact sports without being limited by corrective lenses. Improved appearance and self-confidence that follows will also improve your life and career opportunities.

Side Effects/Complications of LASIK

Side effects and complications are very rare in LASIK surgery, with worries of infection being 1 in 5000 surgeries. This compares favourably with 1 in every 2000 contact lens wearer at risk for infection. Eye infections are usually detected early and treated with medication.

Under and over correction is another rare complication that can be corrected by fine-tuning of the vision in appropriate cases. Glares and haloes may be experienced at night, but usually diminishes gradually. This side effect is becoming much more rare with the advancement of our latest LASIK technology.

Kasemrad Hospital Prachachuen offer you the most recent development in vision correction - a procedure called Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK. This procedure shows remarkable improvements in patient risk and correction capabilities.

Rather than making cuts in the cornea, the PRK process uses an excimer laser to sculpt an area 5 to 9 millimeters in diameter on the surface of the eye. This process removes only 5-10% of the thickness of the cornea for mild to moderate myopia and up to 30% for extreme myopia - about the thickness of 1 to 3 human hairs. The major benefit of this procedure is that the integrity and the strength of the corneal dome is retained. The excimer laser is set at a wavelength of 193nm, which can remove a microscopic corneal cell layer without damaging any adjoining cells. This allows the practitioner to make extremely accurate and specific modifications to the cornea with little trauma to the eye.

This ability to sculpt, rather than cut, opens up the arena for treating additional vision conditions. At this stage, there are excimer laser machines that with a combination of masks and computer controls, can reliably treat myopia, hyperopia and now astigmatism.

Custom Vue Lasik - In the past the size of eyes and astigmatism of a patient would make it difficult for for LASIK surgery. But our new option called Custom Vue will allow a patient to have an excellent treatment with minimal to no visual effects at night.

Custom Vue uses wavescan technology to map the unique characteristics of your vision.
That information is then transferred to the laser. Our doctors perform the typical LASIK surgery from there. After some anesthetic drops a thin flap about the width of a hair is cut on the cornea. The laser treats the eye in several seconds...then the flap is refolded.

The entire procedure takes only around 20 minutes and patients start to see improvement immediately.
